Travel Nouveau
Whether you’re beginning to think about travel (as many of us have been unable to since COVID) or re-thinking the concept entirely, I wonder what the new essence of travel will be.
When exploring the historical modes of how we have transported ourselves from one place to another for business or vacation presents something truly interesting. Even more fascinating is our penchant for travelling well or to say, “with style” …
I think we can all appreciate jet-setting from one luxurious locale to another, but on the whole, that is not the reality for most, and yet for much of history, the idea of travelling well (and let’s add the concept of being well-travelled) is something that has permeated through social classes and time.
Trains, Steamships, and Airplanes present the canvas, and the traveler is provided the opportunity to do something more than just move from point to point. Herein lies the place where the experience is made, and hopefully done so with a personal and unique style.
From luggage, to the packing process, to being in transit at a train station or airport, aside from travel itself, there’s a whole ecosystem that supports our need and desire to move about in a stylish way. The luxury waiting area, the prestigious hotel, even the taxi rides in between, all call for a certain since of occasion, almost a formality if you will. One of my favorite quotes is the one about “dressing well is a certain form of kindness”, and I’m truly inspired by the periods in history when people dressed up to take the train, sail the steamship, board the flight, in essence…to travel.
Only time will tell if we return to that sensibility on the whole, however, for those of us with the sartorial blood flowing through our veins, travelling has been and will always be the special occasion to express our personal style and do so with kindness!
Be well and travel well.
